Public Schools
Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) is one of the most diverse school systems in the country, and continues to be in the forefront of technology integration in the classroom.

The 19-school system features:

  • 12 elementary schools
  • 5 middle schools
  • 1 pre-K through 8th-grade school
  • T.C. Williams High School

Each Alexandria public school offers educational programming focused on smaller learning communities designed to increase academic achievement and the level of student engagement. The system boasts National Merit Scholars, a wide variety of Advanced Placement courses, a world-class curriculum, and award-winning teachers. Private Schools
The City is home to a variety of private schools, ranging from early education (pre-K) through college preparatory boarding high school. These schools attract students from all around the region and work collaboratively with the ACPS to create a community of learning that supports all students.

Diversity

Places of Worship
Alexandria is a diverse city located in a diverse metropolitan area, and residents thus have access to an abundance of options for worship. Approximately 70 places of worship are located within the City, with more than 450 additional places of worship in surrounding areas.

Libraries
The Alexandria Library consists of the Beatley Central Library and three branches that house a total collection of nearly a half-million volumes. The system circulates 1 million books annually. Visit the Alexandria Library website for more information.

Health
Alexandria offers world-class health care providers and facilities. Inova Alexandria Hospital is one of the largest health care providers in Northern Virginia. This 363-bed facility cares for more than 50,000 patients yearly. The hospital offers a full-service emergency department, an obstetric and maternity unit, CT scanning, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, a poison control center, and comprehensive surgical capabilities. Dozens of additional hospitals are located in the region, including four major medical schools with hospitals nearby. There are also 360 physicians, 120 dentists, and various walk-in clinics located in the City of Alexandria.

The Alexandria Health Department implements statewide health programs and provides clinics, nutritional planning, dental care, and more for residents. Safety
Alexandria maintains a highly trained, diverse, and well-equipped police department, with a current authorized strength of 320 sworn and 138 civilian employees. The mission of the Alexandria Police Department is to provide competent, courteous, professional, and community-oriented police services. The department is headquartered at 3600 Wheeler Avenue, in a modern 124,000-square-foot four-story building that was completed in 2012. The Alexandria Fire Department holds a special place in the history of the City of Alexandria. Founded in 1774, it counts President George Washington among its early members. The first paid professional firefighters were hired in 1855. Today, the department employs more than 250 professional personnel, which include firefighters, paramedics, fire prevention staff, and administrative support. A network of nine stations protects 15 square miles. Among the department’s specialized teams are the Northern Virginia Regional Hazardous Materials Team, Technical Rescue, Marine Operations, and the Special Operations Team.
